With Much Appreciation and Gratitude…

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

“The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.”

- George Washington

To those who stepped up to the call of our country and served–may your countrymen always remember, support and serve you. You ask little and yet give so much of yourselves.

Those of us at Essentials want to thank our veterans, past and present for their service. You have our gratitude and appreciation for the sacrifices that you and your families, have made on our behalf.

To my Father, Son, Son-in-law and the other veterans in my life, a personal thanks. You embody the ideals and values that are the foundation of this country and I am privileged to have known you.

Thank you from this grateful daughter, mother and citizen.

Celebrating the Worker

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

The Labor Day weekend approaches quickly as we toil away. We, who labor daily are surely looking forward to the long weekend that heralds the close of summer. As a Floridian, I have a few more months of heat and hurricane watching to look forward to, still I appreciate the holiday that was first started to celebrate the American worker.

My celebration will begin with a couple of birthday’s–a four generation spread between them–and a weekend spent with family and friends, some BBQ and a lot of laughter. We will be taking time from work–to be reminded of why we do it all.

My wish for you is that whether you are escaping for one last weekend trip, attending a parade or closing down your community pool, that your Labor Day holiday is one filled with joy and laughter. Happy Labor Day! From all of us at Essentials.

CEO Golfing Behavior vs. The Charities

Monday, July 20th, 2009
Golfer Swing

Recently Del Jones in his article, In bad economy, CEOs don’t want to be seen playing golf, illustrates how sensitized CEO’s have become with regard to their golf games. It looks like CEO’s are more concerned with their perceived personal image, especially when it comes to their behavior with the game. It isn’t just their handicap that is suffering.

While reading his article, I thought it interesting that there are some unintended consequences of abstaining CEO golfers. Charity coffers are feeling the pinch in our current economy in yet another way—golf charity events.

According to Del Jones, most of the money comes from local clubs that provide venues. I know that the public is watching CEO behavior, but I really dislike the idea that charities that source funding from golfing venues would be targeted as one more casualty of our economy.

What are your thoughts? Have you seen golf charity events suffering in your neighborhood?

Fourth of July Remembrance

As we near the celebration of the Fourth of July, I am reminded of the time that I spent recently in the Washington Square Park located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is situated near Independence Hall and so many historic areas of Philadelphia. (more…)

Citigroup to Increase Wages: Will That be Enough?

Thursday, June 25th, 2009
Fist full of dollars

According to Josh Fineman in his article entitled, “Citigroup Plans to Raise Salaries by as Much as 50%“, Citigroup plans to increase base salaries. The idea would be to compensate for the reduction in bonuses and so hopefully remain an employer of choice. In addition, they are implementing a new stock option plan to accompany the increases.

My thoughts are this, even though they are not the only affected bank to adopt this measure, do you think that they will remain competitive as an employer in the current market place environment? I suspect that since bonuses, according to the above article, are two-thirds of banker’s compensation that it will be pretty hard for Citigroup to compensate at a level that will keep their top producers on board, even with a stock option plan that gives them one share option per every restricted share of stock to go with this new increase.

What are your thoughts?
